This stuff is fantastic with a very rich latakia taste and a elegant plume of white fragrant smoke. Personally in the world of pipe tobacco there should be a blend known as Latakia based, with the "spice tobaccos" added in, which quite a few blends would fall under. this one is a big one , with strengh and interesting flavours , it needs a quiet ambiance to aassess its extent ; one of my favorites. Pirate Kake is only for the true Latakia Lover, it has 70% Latakia in it , so unless your a big fan of Latakia, as I am, you may not want to buy over a sample to try. After just shy of 4 years in the cellar the blend becomes very sweet, round, and displays a number of notes not originally apparent. I would leave it for an end of the evening smoke. this is a once-in-a-while-I-have-been-drinking-Jack Daniels-kinda of smoke.So when you feeling ten feet tall and bullet proof or you are at odds with the mrs. or uyou are at the nearest biker bar, pack a good size bowl and light up the cannons. Without question, the different sized chunks of tobacco, with different blends of leaf, is at the root of the many different sub-flavors that manifest during the bowl. It's alottalatakia, ALOTTALATAKIA!. My tin was dated from 2015. I'll have to get more soon, or my aging remnants will not last that long! Comparisons are almost always inadequate and mistakenly imply some presumtion of superiority. The smokiness is front and centre throughout. Theyre just a better smoke. In the tin you will find a dark square Crumble Cake, very easy to break apart and to load your pipe. If you LOVE not like latakia try this but good god come on man. Once you are habituated to it, you are pleasantly surprised from time to time by the sweetness that comes through, possibly as an artifact of your palate adjusting to the overwhelming flavor of the Latakia. This tobacco has the same taste, until it all gone, unlike some tobacco's that after half the bowl is gone then you get an ashy burnt like taste. This is for those dirty pirates!!! Haharrrrr!! The only downside I've found to this blend is the mouth-drying effect it has. Takes a light well and burns with few relights. The smoke from the Pirates Kake draws me in. This powerful, Latakia laden stuff breaks up easily. The Creosote flavor is there, with a slight nutty undertone on occasion. Keeps away loiterers and unwanted company. Order this. It is a little less dense than others I've had and also not at all wet, for me it is presented with perfect moisture content, but some may find it a touch dry. I appreciate GLP Maltese Falcon and Odissey, that I find more enjoyable and round than this. My have times changed, and so has my taste in tobacco blends. Pirate Kake is definitely a "Lat. PK made the top 5 list. I suppose it depends on your mood when smoking it. I pack it somewhat loosly and it lights easily and burns nicely. a booming amount of latakia, some burley and orientals. The Burley and Turkish help to smooth out the smoke and add faint delicious undertones, but the Latakia is supremely dominant throughout the smoke, and never falters. This leaves my mouth feeling bitten for a day or two afterwards. A smooth, robust blend with lots (75%!) seriously, if you even think you like Latakia, try this. Less sweet, more nutty, camp fire smokiness. It is too much, after a few minutes of it my senses numbed. It burns cool and delivers latakia flavor like nothing else except perhaps for Penzance. PK has the reputation for being a Lat bomb, but it is actually a nice and smooth smoke. So keep yer bilge suckin grimy hooks outta mee tobacco, or itll be the locker fer ya all!! The scent from the open bag makes promises that are kept. It remained smooth and cool throughout while the spiciness of the Turkish and the sweet underpinings of the Cavendish also made their presence known. Pairs great with a nicely aged tawny port, or a Macallan Cask Strength. The room note is sublime. Not terribly complex, almost one dimensional, but quite good at what it does. . Offering a wide assortment of styles and flavors, Nakhla really is one of the best brands without doubt. I tend to think either C&D is using some very old Latakia or that this blend is not 70% Latakia. In summary, this seems to be a Penzance lite. Of course the smoky stuff is prominent but its not all there is: smoky, sweet, zesty, and a slightly sour note on the finish combine to make a tasty and interesting smoke. A gentleman was smoking this at the tobacco shop I frequent and I was shocked at how strong the smell was. I've just ordered a bunch online and my point is, that like peaty scotch, this is an acquired taste. This blend is LOADED with it for sure, and there just isn't any other way to put it. Third mistake: Turkish is absolutely useless and this is not an oriental blend! The other reviews describe it well. Flavorful. The overwhelming sensory overload of so much latakia might make some believe that there is "strength" in this mixture. Nicotine and body are mild, but the taste is medium/strong. I can't really pick them out. Truly, the good tobaccos are better with age and this is one of them!!! Smoked well with liquor, and savored slowly, it has properties that could easily gain 4 stars. Usually I do not think I would like such a heavy latakia blend but this is good. Yep this and star of the east are extremely delicious tobaccos. A lot has already been said about it and everything that was said in favor of it is true. Indeed smoking of this tobacco is a spiritual experience! I would never have purchased this by just reading the 75 % Latakia, but trying this in the sampler was a very nice surprise! And on. I think you could improve any blend with the addition of PK, most aromatics excepted. A couple weeks later when I could imagine wanting Latakia again, I put some nice Squadron Leader in the pipe and smoked it down 1/4 way, until the shank cracked 1/2 down from the bowl. While I did enjoy this with a good jolt of black rum on the side at a party, I'm not sure it's a daily kind of smoke. Details. During the smoke this left a sweet, rich, smoky aftertaste and after the smoke the same aftertaste that was pleasant for over an hour.
